Adding anything to the environment that makes it less fit for living things is called pollution. Pollution of the environment has increased with population growth and industrial development. Gaseous wastes from cars and trucks, the burning of fuels, and industrial wastes dumped into streams and rivers have polluted the waterways. The land has been polluted by tremendous quantities of soild wastes generated by industry and by the population in general. Some of the industrial wastes are highly toxic.
